The modus operandi of online scam syndicates, including psychological manipulation tactics used to create feelings of fear and panic among victims, as well as identity impersonation through the use of fake accounts resembling those of law enforcement agencies, government departments, or individuals known to the victims to gain trust, was highlighted in the briefing ‘Online Scams’.
The briefing was conducted by the Cyber Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department, Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) in conjunction with the Y-Lite 2026 Programme, at Dar Al-Intishar, Jerudong Sports Complex recently.
The public was reminded not to transfer money or disclose confidential information, such as one-time password (OTP) codes, to any party, as no government agency conducts official business or carries out transactions through social media platforms.
Calls from unknown individuals should be verified through the official contact numbers of the relevant agencies. Any incidents or attempted scams should be reported immediately to the Anti-Scam Helpline at 16993.
The briefing formed part of the RBPF’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cyber security awareness and digital literacy among youth, equipping them to be more resilient against the growing threat of online scams.
The briefing, delivered by Chief Inspector Adinin bin Haji Ahmad, was attended by 45 youth aged between 18 and 30.
