Religious education in Brunei Darussalam must continue to evolve with the needs of the times while remaining firmly grounded in Islamic faith, Syariah and noble values, the Friday sermon highlighted on Friday.
The sermon, delivered at mosques nationwide, marked 70 years of formal religious education in the Sultanate under the theme ‘Seven Decades of Formal Religious Education: Evolution, Transformation and Legacy’.
The sermon said religious education has developed from a relatively simple system in its early years into one that is more structured and comprehensive.
As the world continues to change, particularly with globalisation and advances in technology, efforts must continue to strengthen and renew religious education so that it remains relevant without compromising the foundations upon which it was established.
The sermon described the anniversary theme through three key elements – evolution, transformation and legacy.
“Evolution” reflects the changes and developments within the religious education system in response to the needs of the times, while “transformation” represents continuous efforts to renew and strengthen the system amid global and technological developments.
“Legacy”, meanwhile, refers to the strong foundations established since the introduction of formal religious education in the country, including the contributions of scholars, educators and leaders in developing an education system based on Al-Quran and As-Sunnah.
The sermon also underscored the importance of knowledge as one of the greatest blessings bestowed by Allah the Almighty, saying it does more than broaden a person’s understanding.
Knowledge serves as a foundation for elevating one’s standing, building personal dignity and providing guidance throughout life in this world and the hereafter.
Religious education, in particular, should not be viewed merely as the transmission of religious knowledge, the sermon said.
Instead, it should guide individuals to put what they learn into practice by strengthening their faith, performing acts of worship and cultivating noble character.
Congregants were also reminded that the most noble among people in the sight of Allah the Almighty are those who are most pious and God-fearing.
The sermon concluded with a prayer for efforts to elevate religious education in Brunei Darussalam to continue receiving blessings from Allah the Almighty and to produce generations who are knowledgeable, faithful and of noble character, while being capable of contributing to religion, the nation and the country.
