Muslims have been urged to uphold good conduct, maintain harmonious relationships and be mindful of their words and actions to avoid hurting others.
The Friday sermon reminded the congregation that good manners are an important part of faith, highlighting the need to preserve ties with family members, friends, neighbours and the wider community.
It cited a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah, in which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that the most complete in faith among believers are those with the best character.
The sermon said Muslims should be careful with their speech, choosing kind and beneficial words while avoiding insults, excessive joking and remarks that could cause distress or damage relationships.
While Islam permits humour and light-hearted interactions, the sermon cautioned against going overboard, particularly when jokes involve mocking or humiliating others.
It also warned that excessive laughter could harden the heart and distract a person from remembering Allah the Almighty.
The sermon outlined several boundaries that should be observed when joking, including avoiding lies, frightening or intimidating others, making fun of people, spreading hurtful remarks and causing physical or emotional harm.
It further stressed that serious matters must not be treated as jokes, particularly those concerning marriage, divorce and reconciliation.
Citing a hadith narrated by Abu Dawud, the sermon said that three matters are serious whether undertaken seriously or jokingly – marriage, divorce and taking back a wife after divorce.
The congregation was also reminded not to allow anger and misunderstandings to damage relationships, particularly ties between fellow Muslims.
Instead, they were encouraged to seek forgiveness, forgive others and avoid holding grudges, while remaining mindful of the feelings of those who may have been hurt.
The sermon concluded by reminding Muslims that worldly life is temporary and that the Hereafter is better for those who remain mindful of Allah the Almighty.
It cited verse 32 of Surah Al-An’am, which describes worldly life as play and amusement, while affirming that the Hereafter is better for those who are conscious of Allah the Almighty.
