Friday sermon reminds Muslims to prioritise the Hereafter

Muslims have been reminded that worldly possessions and success are temporary blessings that should be used as a means to attain Allah the Almighty’s pleasure and prepare for the Hereafter.

The reminder was highlighted in the Friday sermon, which emphasised the importance of strengthening faith, practising piety and avoiding being consumed by worldly pursuits.

Quoting Surah Ghafir, verse 39, the sermon stated that worldly life is only a temporary enjoyment, while the Hereafter is the lasting abode.

The sermon reminded congregants that wealth, status and material possessions are among the tests from Allah the Almighty, and should not become the main purpose of life or distract from religious obligations.

“Worldly blessings are not forbidden in Islam. However, Muslims must ensure that their pursuit of wealth is accompanied by lawful work, sincerity and obedience to Allah the Almighty,” the sermon said.

It added that earning a halal income, supporting one’s family, helping those in need, paying zakat and contributing to society are among the ways wealth can become a source of reward.

The sermon also warned that wealth can become a dangerous temptation when it causes people to neglect prayers, commit wrongdoing or place material gains above moral responsibilities.

Citing a hadith narrated by Imam Muslim, the sermon reminded Muslims that the world is attractive and filled with temptations, but Allah the Almighty observes how people use the blessings entrusted to them.

Congregants were urged to reflect on whether their wealth and time are bringing them closer to Allah the Almighty or becoming a source of distraction.

The sermon further reminded Muslims that life in this world is like that of a traveller, citing a hadith narrated by Imam Al-Bukhari in which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised believers to live in this world like strangers or travellers.

Muslims were encouraged to constantly remember death, increase good deeds, seek forgiveness, recite the Quran, give charity and remain steadfast in worship.

The sermon concluded by reminding believers that the true value of worldly blessings lies in using them responsibly, with gratitude and sincerity, while keeping the Hereafter as the ultimate goal.
