SIBU (Dec 20): Dog owners should act responsibly and make the effort to bring their dogs for vaccination to help keep the environment safe, said Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau.
He said it was unfortunate that many dog owners still failed to vaccinate their dogs despite numerous free rabies vaccination sessions being held throughout the year.
“As a responsible citizen, it is your responsibility to bring your dogs for vaccination and, together, help keep a safe environment,” he said.
Lau was speaking at a free rabies vaccination session held at Permai Lake Garden here on Saturday.
He said that while the number of dog bite cases may not be high, the danger lies in the consequences of rabies infection.
“The problem is that once a person is bitten, the chances of dying are very high,” he said.
Lau also advised dog owners not to allow their pets to roam freely on the streets, as there is a high risk of exposure to rabies.
“Keep them at home to ensure that the dogs do not contract rabies,” he said.
He said the government remains very concerned about rabies cases, which is why the Veterinary Services Department has been actively conducting free rabies vaccination programmes.
“Hopefully, by continuing this kind of activity, we can create greater awareness among residents about the importance of ensuring their dogs are vaccinated,” he added.
Lau noted that today’s free rabies vaccination session marked the final programme for the year.
He said a total of eight free rabies vaccination programmes were conducted this year, with about 800 dogs vaccinated.
Next year, subject to the availability of additional funding, Lau said the programme would continue to ensure the environment remains safe.
“We would like to thank the public for their support in bringing their dogs for vaccination,” he said.
