SIBU (Jan 8): The upgrading of Jalan Sungai Maaw, a project implemented under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP), is progressing ahead of schedule and is now expected to be completed by the end of this month.
Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the RM1.4 million project began on Oct 1, 2025 with an original six-month contract period slated to end on March 31 this year.
However, with current progress at approximately 57 per cent, an early finish is anticipated.
“If everything goes well, we are expecting to complete this project by the end of January,” he said when met during a site visit.
Wong explained that the project involves upgrading 1.2 kilometres of pre-mix road along a stretch frequently affected by flooding.
“This road has been constructed many times before, but it is always flooded. With this upgrading work, I hope that after completion, the people will no longer face problems, especially during the rainy season,” he said.
He emphasised that an early completion would be particularly advantageous as March typically brings heavy rainfall to the area.
He confirmed the project is funded through his RTP allocation, reiterating that improving basic infrastructure in flood-prone rural areas remains a priority for community safety and convenience.
The project is implemented by Zetramax Sdn Bhd, according to the latest report from December 2025.
Once finished, the upgraded Jalan Sungai Maaw is set to significantly enhance road conditions and accessibility for local residents.
