KUCHING (Dec 13): The 32-year-old Kenyalang Park Market has undergone a revamp by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), involving the upgrading of 728 pedestal seats at a total cost of RM105,640.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the upgrading works commenced on Nov 27 following the formal handover of the market site to the successful tenderer.
“The project was awarded through an open tender process, which involved evaluation and the selection of the lowest compliant bid, reflecting the council’s commitment to transparency and accountability in its procurement procedures,” he told reporters during the inspection and handover of the newly installed stools at the market here on Saturday.
Wee said the old seating had been replaced with new hot-dipped galvanised steel pedestals fitted with 380-millimetre round fibreglass seats.
He added that the initiative forms part of MBKS’ Love Your Market programme under the council’s broader Gastronomy agenda.
According to him, the council has previously carried out various repair and upgrading works at the market, including improvements to fans, lighting and the rear access ramp.
“In recent years, we have been implementing upgrades in stages, as it is not feasible to carry out all the improvements at once. Whenever funding becomes available, we consolidate resources to carry out the necessary works,” he said.
In a related development, Wee said MBKS plans to collaborate with the Health Department to promote healthier eating habits among market patrons.
He said the proposed initiative would involve providing calorie information for food sold at the market to help consumers better understand their dietary intake and make informed lifestyle choices.
“This is a long-term plan. As we move towards becoming a smart city, it is equally important to ensure that our people are healthy,” he added.
Wee also noted that improved facilities enhance market vibrancy and contribute to the sustainability of local food culture.
