MIRI (Dec 16): The media plays an integral role in society, serving as a vital bridge between the people and authorities by reporting issues that matter to the community, including social concerns, development challenges, community achievements, and emerging trends.
Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said as such members of the media deserve recognition for their selfless dedication, noting that journalists are often among the first to arrive at the scene and the last to rest, frequently placing the needs of others above their own well-being.
“You have been an invaluable partner to the state government in highlighting on the ground realities, amplifying the voices of the community and showcasing progress through your stories. For that, we are truly grateful,” he said at the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association’s (NSJA) pre-Christmas dinner on Monday.
Lee commended journalists for their commitment and professionalism, reiterating that their demanding work often involves long hours and high-pressure situations.
Recognising the nature of journalists’ work, he said he has supported the NSJA’s annual health screening programme since 2016.
“Journalists work long hours under pressure and tight deadlines, and it is important that you take time to undergo regular check-ups, monitor your health, and look after yourselves,” he said.
He stressed that good health is essential for journalists to continue carrying out their responsibilities with energy, clarity, and passion.
Lee welcomed NSJA’s efforts to strengthen media capabilities in an increasingly digital and technology-driven environment, citing courses such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Newsroom, held in July, as crucial in ensuring journalists remain relevant, adaptable, and well-equipped to navigate advancements in artificial intelligence and digital innovation.
“These initiatives reflect NSJA’s forward-looking mindset in preparing its members for the future of journalism,” he added.
NSJA president Chai Chon Chin said the association has benefited greatly from initiatives supported by Lee, including the special grant for its health screening programme.
“We hope that he will continue to support NSJA in organising more training programmes for the media in the coming year, while also sustaining important initiatives such as our annual health screening to ensure the well-being and professional growth of our members,” he said.
