Muslims have been urged to constantly express gratitude for the blessings and sustenance bestowed by Allah the Almighty, with gratitude reflected not only through words but also through the heart and actions.
The reminder was delivered during today’s Friday sermon, which emphasised that faith and gratitude are closely connected and can lead to a person attaining Allah the Almighty’s pleasure and blessings in this world and the Hereafter.
The sermon highlighted the many blessings granted by Allah the Almighty, including good health, intellect and lawful sustenance, which should be used to strengthen worship and carry out beneficial deeds.
It stressed that gratitude should be demonstrated in three ways – through the heart, through speech and through actions.
Gratitude through the heart involves recognising that all blessings come from Allah the Almighty, while gratitude through speech includes praising and thanking Him for His blessings.
Gratitude through actions, meanwhile, means using the blessings received in ways that are pleasing to Allah the Almighty and beneficial to others.
The sermon also reminded Muslims to seek lawful sustenance and make proper use of their intellect and physical abilities in fulfilling their responsibilities and worshipping Allah the Almighty.
It cited teachings from the Quran and hadith on the virtues of gratitude, including the promise that those who are grateful and have faith will be protected from Allah the Almighty’s punishment.
Muslims were also encouraged to cultivate humility, kindness and compassion, noting that a grateful heart should be reflected in good character and concern for others.
The sermon cited a supplication taught by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), asking Allah the Almighty to make a person grateful, mindful, obedient and humble, while accepting repentance, forgiving sins, answering prayers, guiding the heart and correcting the tongue.
The sermon concluded by urging the congregation to continuously appreciate Allah the Almighty’s blessings and demonstrate gratitude through obedience and righteous deeds.
It also cited Surah An-Nisa, verse 147, which states that Allah the Almighty would not punish people if they are grateful and have faith, and that Allah the Almighty is Appreciative and All-Knowing.
