Muslims have been urged to strengthen their faith, remain steadfast in their belief in Allah the Almighty and avoid syirik, or associating partners with Allah the Almighty, during the Friday sermon delivered in Brunei Darussalam.
The sermon reminded congregants that piety brings blessings and success in this world and the Hereafter, while emphasising the importance of maintaining a strong Islamic creed amid the pursuit of worldly wealth, power and material comforts.
It said Islam encourages Muslims to work, seek lawful sustenance, care for their families and enjoy the blessings of life, provided these pursuits do not distract them from their religious obligations.
However, the sermon cautioned against becoming overly attached to worldly possessions and forgetting that all sustenance, authority and benefits ultimately come from Allah the Almighty.
It stressed that worship and supplication must be directed solely to Allah the Almighty, warning against placing trust in objects or created beings believed to possess supernatural powers or the ability to grant wishes, increase sustenance or bring good fortune.
The sermon also warned against practices involving the veneration of graves, objects and other creations in the belief that they can provide protection, blessings or supernatural assistance, describing such beliefs as contrary to Islamic teachings.
Quoting a hadith narrated by Abdullah bin Abbas, the sermon recalled the Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) teaching that when seeking help, Muslims should seek it from Allah the Almighty, and when asking for assistance, they should ask Allah the Almighty.
Congregants were reminded to guard their words, actions and intentions against anything that could compromise their faith, including practices or expressions that could lead to syirik.
