SIBU (Dec 7): The Sibu Municipal Council’s (SMC) ongoing effort to empower its Child Council provides young people with a platform to understand local government operations and engage directly with the community. According to Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) councillor Kevin Lau, the initiative also encourages youths to reach out to the local community and care for those in need. “What is important is that it shows a presence within the community—reaching closer to the people and demonstrating that we care for our society,” Lau said when officiating the charity walk at Permai Lake Garden here on Saturday, organised by the Sibu Child Council. Some 130 participants took part in the event. He noted that although the event was a simple charity walk, its significance went far beyond exercise. “A charity walk is made possible because of the volunteers, organisers and participants — everyone coming together for the same purpose. It is not just for charity for health; it is about standing united, caring for those in need, and showing kindness.” Lau added that every participant was making a small yet meaningful gesture of support for the community. “This spirit must be passed on to all generations, especially the younger ones. Every step you take today will put a smile on someone’s face and make a difference in their life.” Meanwhile, Sibu Child Council Taskforce chairman and SMC councillor Kiing Teck Ho said the event promoted a healthy lifestyle, strengthened community spirit, and supported meaningful social work that uplifts those in need. The sole beneficiary, Sibu Methodist Care Centre, has long cared for vulnerable groups, and the council was honoured to support their efforts. The event was sponsored by Sar-Alam Indah Sdn Bhd, which contributed RM5,000 directly to the Methodist Care Centre. Event organising chairman Alvin Lau described the walk as a reminder that collective effort with a shared purpose can create positive change for the community. Also present were Sibu Methodist Care Centre president Soon Kong Tiong, SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley, and Sar-Alam Indah manager Lau Yih Horng.
