KUCHING (Dec 10): A newly launched RM7 million alternative pipeline project is set to bring long-awaited relief to residents in the Jagoi area of Bau, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
Deputy Minister of Transport Sarawak (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep said the project is expected to resolve the persistent low water pressure issues that have affected households for years.
Henry, who is also Tasik Biru assemblyman, said the initiative was approved after the existing water supply system could no longer cope with rising demand, particularly during festive periods.
“Of the RM7 million approved, RM5 million has been tendered and construction begins today (Tuesday). The project is expected to be completed within five months, before the Gawai celebrations,” he said when launching the project in Bau on Tuesday.
The project involves constructing an additional pipeline from Bau, creating two supply routes on both sides of the road with a combined capacity of two million litres per day.
Henry said the new line will not only cater to the needs of Jagoi residents but also support the future demand from the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Serikin once it becomes operational.
He added that the additional pipeline will serve as an alternative route to ensure uninterrupted supply should leaks occur in the existing line.
“With two separate routes, water pressure can be maintained without disruption, preventing the recurring shortages residents previously faced. This problem has dragged on for many years, and with this project, we are confident it can finally be resolved,” he said.
Approximately 3,000 residents in Jagoi are expected to benefit from the upgraded system, with demand projected to rise to 5,000 users once the ICQS is operational.
Also present were Bau district officer Eddy Nayoi and Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) Sarawak (Development) divisional assistant water engineer, Ts Siet Ung Wu.
