SIBU (Dec 15): Christmas is more than a religious celebration in culturally diverse nations like Malaysia — it is a symbol of unity that brings people of different backgrounds together in peace, friendship and mutual respect, said Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau.
The Young Men’s Christian Association’s (YMCA) honorary life president and executive advisor pointed out that Christmas is a festival celebrated around the world by both Christians and non-Christians alike.
“In a culturally diverse nation like ours, Christmas represents more than a religious celebration — it is a symbol of unity. It reminds us that despite our different backgrounds, we can come together in peace, friendship, and mutual respect,” Lau said at YMCA Christmas Carolling by Candlelight at Permai Lake Garden here on Sunday night.
“Here at the YMCA, we are proud to uphold a long-standing tradition of celebrating Christmas with the people of Sibu.
“Since 1975, we have organised the Christmas Carolling by Candlelight event, bringing together generations of families and communities through music, fellowship, and shared faith,” he added.
According to him, the YMCA continues the tradition because it believes in nurturing the true spirit of Christmas — love, goodwill and unity.
“We also hope that gatherings like this will help strengthen harmony and foster closer relationships among the people of Sibu, across different denominations and communities.”
As a community-based non-profit organisation, Lau said the YMCA remains committed to promoting the spiritual, mental, physical and social development of individuals, with a special focus on young people.
Its goal, he added, is to help nurture responsible citizens and future leaders of the nation, while welcoming the community to join hands in advancing the mission and values of the YMCA movement worldwide.
Reflecting on the year coming to an end, Lau said 2025 had brought its share of challenges but also many opportunities to learn, grow and become better individuals.
He noted that it was a year of setting new goals, achieving dreams and reaching milestones.
Looking ahead, he extended his wishes for a fresh start in the new year, filled with renewed energy, hope and confidence for all.
Meanwhile, YMCA Sibu president Senator Robert Lau said the association is here to provide a venue for all Christians of any denominations to gather and serve the community.
“Most of all, it is to cater for the young adults and children, as seen in tonight’s event performed by young children,” he said in his welcoming address.
The Christmas message was delivered by Father Ivan Fang.
Among those present were YMCA Sibu vice president Wong Ei Sing, secretary Teresa Lau and treasurer Penghulu Yong King Sung.
