KUCHING (Jan 1): Sarawak is firmly on track towards achieving the Sarawak Maju Makmur 2030 vision as the state enters 2026 with renewed confidence, unity and momentum, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
In his New Year 2026 address delivered in conjunction with the countdown celebration on Dec 31, Abang Johari said Sarawak continued to record meaningful progress under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, with clear socio-economic gains achieved throughout 2025.
He said more than 1,000 kilometres of new and upgraded roads had been completed, while the main sections of the Pan Borneo Highway are now fully completed, resulting in safer and faster travel and unlocking economic growth potential in both urban and rural areas.
“The quality of life of the people has also been enhanced through wider access to clean water supply, electricity and internet connectivity.
“Digital transformation is being driven by the establishment of international-standard data centres, the adoption of artificial intelligence and cloud technology, as well as more efficient and user-friendly e-government systems,” he said.
Abang Johari said human capital development remains central to Sarawak’s progress, with initiatives such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), scholarships and the implementation of the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) beginning in 2026 to ensure greater access to quality education.
To address cost-of-living pressures, he said the Sarawak government will continue the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS), with an increased allocation of RM640 million in 2026 to safeguard household well-being.
The Premier also reaffirmed Sarawak’s commitment to environmental sustainability, including the preservation of forests, rivers and biodiversity, alongside the expansion of clean energy development for future generations.
Looking ahead, Abang Johari said 2026 marks a crucial phase in Sarawak’s journey towards becoming a developed region by 2030, with a focus on high-impact economic sectors and future-ready infrastructure.
He said the commencement of AirBorneo’s operations in 2026 would further enhance air connectivity, boost tourism and trade, and improve mobility for the people.
Emphasising unity as Sarawak’s greatest strength, Abang Johari called on Sarawakians of all races and religions to continue safeguarding harmony and social cohesion.
“Our journey does not end here. The year 2026 promises more opportunities and development that we will realise together,” he added.
