Forest and Grass Fires increase due to Extremely Hot Weather

The significant increase in forest and grass fires that occurred on 25th to 26th April is believed to be due to the extremely hot weather conditions currently affecting the country.

The Fire and Rescue Department in its press release announced that on 25th of April, a total of 7 forest and grass fire emergency calls were received, involving a total area estimated at over 30 hectares. Of these, the area near the Universiti Teknologi Brunei recorded the largest fire area of approximately 28 hectares. Meanwhile, on 26th of April, the number of calls increased to 12 cases, with a fire area estimated at over 37 hectares. The Kampung Rimba National Housing Scheme area recorded the highest fire area of approximately 20 hectares. On the same day, through the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC), water bombing assistance from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) was implemented to help control the fire from spreading further to nearby residential areas.

Overall, for the month of April this year, a total of 88 forest fire incidents and 47 grass fire incidents were recorded. The following are the statistics recorded from January to April 2026. The Fire and Rescue Department views this increase seriously and has continuously mobilized personnel and machinery to control and extinguish fires, while ensuring that the safety of the public is always maintained. As an initiative and proactive measure, the Department has also increased regular patrols in high-risk areas that are susceptible to fire.

In this regard, the public is advised to not engage in open burning; always ensure the surrounding area is clean and free of flammable materials and immediately report any fire incident by calling the hotline 995.
