Red Tide Situation

Following a media statement issued on the 10th of February, the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism carried out further monitoring on the red tide situation in Brunei Darussalam waters. It was conducted in collaboration with the Royal Brunei Armed Forces on Friday, 13th of February.

Based on the monitoring and laboratory analysis, the Department of Fisheries found that the red tide phenomenon has now spread from offshore into coastal areas, extending from Muara Beach until Jerudong Beach.

As per the previous advisory, the Department of Fisheries stresses that the public, especially fishermen, are strictly prohibited from catching fish or collecting shellfish at the affected areas, and not to consume fish found dead in Brunei waters as it may be contaminated with toxins harmful to health. Fish vendors are also reminded not to sell small fishes such as aur-aur; tamban; basong-basong; pusu; kuasi; bubuk; and all types of shellfish affected by the red tide. The public is reminded to remove all fish gill, stomach, and internal organs before cooking. The public should not consume small fish in which its gill, stomach, and internal organs cannot be removed, as well as shellfish from affected areas or of unknown origin. The public is also advised to refrain from using the water or engage in any water activities such as swimming at the affected coastal areas, including Muara Beach, Meragang Beach, Tungku Beach and Jerudong Beach.

Report any water discolouration or large-scale fish death in the country's waters and coastal areas at 277 0068 during office hours, or email to 'enquiry@fisheries.gov.bn'.
