Enforcement of Control of the Capture, Importation of Small-sized and Egg-Bearing Lobsters and Crabs

The public and fisheries sector operators were reminded to comply with all regulations and conditions set out under fisheries laws, as well as conduct sales activities responsibly, as a joint commitment to preserving the sustainability of the country's fisheries resources. The warning was issued following inspections carried out by the Fisheries Department to ensure that the lobsters and crabs sold in the country are controlled and within the permitted sizes.

Following inspections conducted throughout January on fish markets, business premises including supermarkets and restaurants, as well as at the Labu Temporary Immigration Control Post in Temburong District, two restaurants were found to be selling small-sized crabs and further action was taken. Businesses are reminded to always comply with the regulations to ensure the crabs and lobsters sold are not egg-bearing, and meet the size requirement, with the crab's carapace must exceed a width of 11.5 centimetres, and the lobster's carapace length must exceed 7.5 centimetres.

Catching and importing lobsters and crabs without licence, or in violation with the stipulated regulation is an offence, and may lead to a compound fine or prosecution in court. For more information, visit the department's website at fisheries.gov.bn and its social media.
