Message in conjunction with World Heart Day 2025

Cardiovascular diseases including heart disease and stroke remain the leading causes of death worldwide. In Brunei Darussalam, cardiovascular disease is also one of the leading causes of death. In 2024, 572 deaths were reported including 313 premature deaths. The number showed an increase of 5 per cent compared to the previous year. The Minister of Health in his message in conjunction with the World Heart Day Celebration 2025 stressed that if these trends are not addressed, they could lead to a decrease in life expectancy and loss of family income as well as pressure on social services aside from affecting work productivity and contribution to the national economy.

 

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar emphasised several key points for everyone to pay attention to. First, every individual needs to take proactive steps in undergoing regular health check-ups to detect risk factors for Cardiovascular Disease. Second, Adopt a healthy lifestyle, including consuming a healthy diet; doing physical activity and getting enough rest. Third, knowing the characteristics of a healthy heart as well as recognizing the symptoms of heart disease and knowing when to seek immediate treatment.

 

Yang Berhormat stressed that in addressing Cardiovascular Diseases, the Ministry of Health remains committed to strengthening the prevention strategy for cardiovascular diseases. These include setting clear targets and related measures to reduce premature deaths due to these diseases and non-communicable diseases; and providing infrastructure as well as services that are comprehensive, equitable, easily accessible and of good quality through health centres and hospitals; Establishing One-Stop Warfarin Clinic Services through the implementation of INR Point of Care services; Creating a more accurate monitoring system and database; and Utilising digital technology by integrating various services and health promotions into the BruHealth application.

 

The Minister of Health also shared that the BN on The Move Championship Campaign is to encourage the public to increase their level of physical activity through walking or increasing the number of daily steps. This year's campaign is strengthened with the introduction of a new, more challenging component, namely monitoring health routines such as water intake, healthy eating and adequate sleep using an incentive points system; as well as the Health Index which helps the public assess their health status and early detection of diseases.
