Athletes told to compete with determination, unwavering spirit

 

Compete with determination, unwavering spirit, and the desire to achieve excellence, said His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC), yesterday in a sabda while advising athletes during the National Flag Handover Ceremony to the Brunei Darussalam contingent competing in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

His Royal Highness also reminded all athletes and officials representing Brunei Darussalam at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to maintain the highest standards of discipline throughout the Games in together uphold the good name and reputation of the country.

His Royal Highness added, “Do not regard your participation as merely attending the Games. Instead, give your fullest focus, commitment, and dedication in every competition. I believe this mindset will be a key driving force towards excellence, and I urge you to make the most of this opportunity to demonstrate your abilities on the international stage.”

His Royal Highness also commended the national weightlifting athlete for successfully earning qualification to compete in the U65kg event for the Games.

Such achievement should serve as an inspiration to all national athletes to continue striving and work hard to qualify not only for the Commonwealth Games, but also for other major international sporting events that Brunei Darussalam will participate in, including the Olympic Games, the Youth Olympic Games, the Asian Games, and others.

This year’s national contingent, His Royal Highness pointed out, includes three female athletes and a female Chef de Mission.

This reflects the continued commitment of promoting inclusive participation of women in sport and ensuring gender balance in the development of sport in Brunei Darussalam, in line with the Strategic Plan of Women in Sport under the BDNOC.

His Royal Highness also reiterated to all officers and coaches of the national contingent to ensure and maintain the aspect of safeguarding athletes. Athletes’ well-being, safety and welfare should always be given priority during commonwealth games. This is one of the aspects that is taken very seriously by the BDNOC.

This year Brunei Darussalam will be sending a contingent of six national athletes, including three female athletes, to compete in the swimming, athletic and weightlifting events at the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. They will be accompanied by three officers and three coaches.
