Excitement and cheer filled Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien as the crowd waited for the arrival of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and members of the royal family.
Among the crowd was a tourist from Morocco who described his first visit to Brunei Darussalam as a memorable experience, praising the country’s warm hospitality, cleanliness and the vibrant atmosphere surrounding His Majesty 80th birthday celebration.
Tarik, who is visiting Brunei with his son Amir, said the pair had long wanted to visit the Sultanate after hearing about its peaceful reputation and strong international relations.
“We’ve wanted to come for many years. Ever since I was young, I had heard about Brunei, but it always seemed like a small and mysterious country. I was curious to see what it was really like,” he said.
The family had initially planned to visit last year but were unable to do so and eventually made the trip this year after being encouraged by a friend, who recommended visiting during His Majesty’s birthday celebration.
“We were told this was the best time to come because there would be many celebrations, street food and events. That’s exactly the kind of experience we wanted,” he said.
Tarik said he was pleasantly surprised by the deep affection Bruneians have for His Majesty and the festive atmosphere that extends over several weeks.
“We didn’t expect such a grand celebration. It was wonderful to see how much the people love His Majesty and celebrate the occasion together,” he added.
Having arrived in Brunei just two days ago, Tarik said he and his son had originally planned to stay for only three or four days but were now considering extending their holiday to a week.
Meanwhile, Taiwan tour leader Kay praised Brunei Darussalam’s peaceful way of life, warm hospitality and welcoming atmosphere during her first visit to the Sultanate, describing the experience as both memorable and heartwarming.
Kay, who arrived in Brunei on July 26, 2026, is leading a tour group of nearly 20 visitors from Taiwan. She said visiting Brunei during His Majesty’s 80th birthday celebration had made the trip even more special. “This is my first time in Brunei, and it’s also the first time for my tour group,” she said. She described Bruneians as kind and welcoming, adding that the country’s relaxed pace of life stood out in contrast to Taiwan.
“The people here are so kind. Everything feels peaceful and comfortable. In Taiwan, life moves very fast because it is a business-oriented place, but here everything is calmer, and you can really enjoy the atmosphere,” she said.
Speaking about the birthday celebration, Kay said she was impressed by the scale of the festivities and the presence of visitors from many countries. “Today I can see how beautiful your country is and how many people from different countries have come together to celebrate His Majesty’s birthday. It’s very touching and makes me feel honoured to be here and witness such a special occasion,” she said.
Kay said her group would return home after their visit, but would bring home many fond memories of Brunei. – Lyna Mohamad
