BND6.8m eco-resort set for 2027 opening

A new BND6.8 million ecotourism and nature-based resort is scheduled to begin operations in August 2027, potentially creating around 80 direct jobs.

Borneo Eco-Resort Sdn Bhd is developing the project with an international hotel operator, said Coordinating Minister of Economic Policies and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin in his ministerial statement during the ongoing Second Meeting of the 22nd Legislative Council (LegCo) session on Monday.

The resort aims to have locals comprise 90 per cent of its workforce within 20 years.

The minister cited the development as an example of the quality investment needed to expand Brunei’s tourism capacity and diversify the products available to visitors.

The project forms part of wider preparations to strengthen the country’s tourism industry ahead of Visit Brunei Year 2027.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf also announced that a nationwide MESRA Campaign would be launched to foster a culture of hospitality, professionalism and service excellence.

“Every frontliner is the face of Brunei Darussalam,” he said, adding that warm greetings, accurate information, prompt assistance, cleanliness, courtesy and effective problem-solving could determine whether visitors felt welcome.

The campaign would extend beyond the tourism industry to the wider service ecosystem. Government agencies, the private sector, industry associations and educational institutions were encouraged to participate in training to be provided by the Tourism Development Department.

Basic training modules on hospitality, communication and destination awareness for frontliners would also be coordinated, alongside stronger feedback mechanisms, recognition for excellent service and corrective action in response to complaints.

“MESRA does not mean friendliness alone. It encompasses service that is convenient, efficient, responsive and consistent,” the minister said.

Visitors should not have to face conflicting information, difficulties obtaining transport or uncertainty over operating hours and payment methods, he added.

The government is also seeking to attract more international events to Brunei throughout 2027, including arts and cultural programmes, sports competitions, recreational activities, festivals, meetings, conferences and conventions.

These events are expected to raise Brunei’s international profile, increase visitor arrivals, extend their stays and generate economic benefits for the tourism sector and local enterprises.
