Education is among the most valuable investments for any nation. In the context of Brunei Darussalam, religious education holds a particularly important position in ensuring that human development is not measured solely by academic achievement and skills, but is also firmly grounded in faith, moral values, character and identity.
Acting Director of Islamic Studies, Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) Hajah Mariana binti Haji Jamil said this as the Chairperson of the Thanksgiving Prayer Ceremony for 29 students who were granted the Ministry of Religious Affairs Scholarship Awards for the 2026/2027 Academic Session to pursue further studies locally and overseas.
She added, “It is with this awareness that the awarding of scholarships by the MoRA should be viewed from a broader perspective. A scholarship is not merely an opportunity to pursue further education; it is a trust and an investment by the nation in the future of its younger generation. Every recipient heading abroad or staying to pursue knowledge carries with them the hopes of their families, the trust of the government, and the responsibility to return and contribute to society and the nation.”
Therefore, she said, “The success of the scholarship programme should not be measured solely by the number of recipients or academic achievements. True success is achieved when the knowledge gained is translated into expertise, leadership, integrity and service to the nation.”
From the total scholarship recipients, 16 students will pursue undergraduate studies at Al-Azhar University and Ma’had Qiraat Shoubra in Egypt. Meanwhile, five students will pursue their studies in Malaysia. Three students have been awarded scholarships to pursue their studies at University College Cork, Ireland.
The ceremony also saw five students receiving scholarships under the ‘A’ Level Special Scheme to pursue their studies at Jerudong International School.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, led by Religious Education Officer, Islamic Studies Department, MoRA Mohammad Zamery bin Haji Nayan.
The programme continued with a video presentation, followed by the presentation of the Ministry of Religious Affairs Scholarship Award Letters to the recipients by Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohammad Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan, the guest of honour.
The ceremony concluded with a Thanksgiving Prayer led by Mohammad Zamery.
