Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr Haji Mohd Zamri bin Haji Sabli said participation in WorldSkills provides valuable international exposure, allowing the participants to gain knowledge, exchange experiences, and learn the latest technologies and best practices.
He added that the experience would help elevate the profile of the Sultanate’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, benchmark skills standards, and support improvements to curricula, training, and assessment in alignment with industry demands, particularly in digitalisation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies.
Dr Haji Mohd Zamri also reminded the national contingent that representing the nation carries the responsibility of upholding the country’s name, urging members to compete with confidence, discipline, and sportsmanship.
He emphasised that success extends beyond medals and rankings to encompass the courage to challenge oneself, strive for higher standards, and bring home insights that can advance the TVET sector and inspire future generations.
He said this during a ceremony where Brunei Darussalam’s national contingent for the 48th WorldSkills Competition received the national flag at a handover ceremony jointly organised by IBTE and Politeknik Brunei yesterday.
Held at the Longhouse Training Restaurant of the IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus, Acting Minister of Education Dato Seri Paduka Dr Awang Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, the guest of honour, formally presented the national flag to the contingent.
WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 will take place from September 22 to 27 in Shanghai, China, bringing together more than 1,400 young competitors from over 70 countries and regions across 64 skill areas.
The competition encompasses a comprehensive range of technical and vocational disciplines, spanning traditional trades to emerging sectors driven by digitalisation and modern technology.
Brunei Darussalam will compete in three skill areas, with IBTE participating in Cooking, while Politeknik Brunei will contest IT Network Systems Administration and Mechanical Engineering CAD.
The global competition provides a stage for young skilled professionals to demonstrate technical competence, creativity, precision, problem-solving abilities, and professionalism against international benchmarks. Beyond the contest itself, the event serves as an international platform for skills development, innovation, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among youth competitors, experts, industry partners, educators, and policymakers.
For Brunei, participation offers local talent the opportunity to benchmark capabilities globally, gain exposure to international best practices, and strengthen professional confidence.
The experience is also expected to support the continued advancement of the national TVET framework through exposure to evolving technologies and international standards, enhancing training programmes and assessment methods while solidifying partnerships with foreign institutions and industry stakeholders.
The flag handover ceremony marks the beginning of the contingent’s campaign in Shanghai as they prepare to represent the nation on the world stage.
