Katok Secondary School emerged as the winner of the inaugural 2026 Dendang Tari Melayu Brunei Competition for secondary schools, sixth form centres and colleges, showcasing students’ talents in traditional Brunei singing and dance.
Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School secured second place, while Raja Isteri Girls High School (STPRI) took third place. The final round and prize presentation ceremony was held at Digadong Hall, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), and was organised by the Ministry of Education through the Arts and Creativity Division, Department of Co-Curriculum Education, in collaboration with the Culture and Arts Division, MCYS.
Guest of honour Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the MCYS Dr Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah officiated the prize presentation.
Seven schools and educational institutions, involving 91 students, competed in the final round of the stage performance competition, which featured singing and dancing. The competition was organised for the first time to encourage students to develop an interest and appreciation for the movements of traditional Brunei dances, while performing their accompanying rhythms in creative ways.
It also aimed to enhance students’ skills and confidence in presenting traditional Brunei songs through singing and dance performances.
Beyond performance skills, the competition sought to foster greater appreciation for the arts and culture, while strengthening students’ understanding of the heritage and cultural traditions of the Brunei community.
