Air quality in Belait and Tutong deteriorated to unhealthy levels Tuesday afternoon, with Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings of 109 and 104 respectively at 4pm.
Brunei-Muara and Temburong recorded moderate air quality, with PSI readings of 99 and 82 respectively.
A PSI reading below 50 is classified as Good, 51-100 as Moderate, 101-200 as Unhealthy, 201-300 as Very Unhealthy and above 300 as Hazardous.
The Ministry of Health (MoH) advised the public to take precautions when PSI readings reach the unhealthy level, including reducing strenuous or prolonged outdoor activities and minimising unnecessary exposure to haze.
Children, older persons and pregnant women are advised to restrict strenuous or prolonged outdoor activities, while those with existing heart or respiratory conditions should avoid such activities.
Anyone experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or difficulty breathing should seek medical attention at the nearest health centre or health facility.
The public is also reminded to contact the Fire and Rescue Department at 995 immediately in the event of bush or forest fires and to refrain from open burning or other activities that could worsen haze conditions.
Complaints regarding open burning, as well as health information and advice, can be directed to the Darussalam Hotline 123.
