Brunei’s lone medallist at the 20th Asian Games Basma Lachkar shared that she was honoured and grateful to represent Brunei Darussalam.
“Winning a medal is special. It is important to perform to the level of my training. Coach’s advice is always to enjoy my performance. I am thankful that after all the hard work with coach Zhao Chunjie, we managed to bring glory to the country.”
She shared that one of the challenges was the limited preparation time before travelling to Japan, as the wushu team had recently returned to Brunei after a 17-day training stint in China.
“With more preparation time, we could have adjusted and recovered better,” she said.
She also commended the organisers and officials at the 20th Asian Games, who were very helpful and worked tirelessly to ensure the games ran smoothly.
The Brunei Darussalam contingent, comprising the Chef de Mission, secretariat officials, and the national wushu team, who returned home after participating in the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan were welcomed by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Aliuddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman at the Arrival Hall of Brunei International Airport. He presented a sesandang to Brunei’s lone medallist Basma Lachkar, who won a bronze medal in the Combined Event Taijiquan and Taijijian at the 20th Asian Games.
The achievement highlights Basma Lachkar’s consistent performance on the international stage, particularly through her participation in this edition of the Asian Games. The permanent secretary conveyed his congratulations on their achievements. He offered words of encouragement to the athletes, urging them to continue working hard, maintain discipline, and uphold a strong sporting spirit in their efforts to bring honour to the country on the international
stage. Director of Youth and Sports Hajah Umi Kalthum binti Haji Abdul Karim, together with senior officials from the Department of Youth and Sports under the MCYS were also present.
Basma Lachkar’s first Asian Games medal came in Hangzhou, China at the 19th Asian Games 2022 held in 2023, where she secured a silver medal in the combined event of Taijijian and Taijiquan.
The accomplishment reflects the commitment and dedication of the national athletes in bringing pride and honour to Brunei Darussalam in the regional and international sporting arena.
