The 60-year journey of Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque, Pekan Tutong, as a centre of worship, Islamic learning and community activities was commemorated during a closing and appreciation ceremony at the mosque’s main prayer hall on Sunday.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque imam Sohibul Omar bin Haji Yusof, followed by welcoming remarks by chief imam Mohammad Waiz bin Tajuddin.
In his remarks, the chief imam expressed appreciation and gratitude to sponsors, waqif, donors and all who had contributed their efforts, ideas and resources towards the development of the mosque throughout its 60 years, particularly those involved in organising the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
He said the ceremony was not merely an appreciation event, but also an opportunity to reflect on the six-decade journey of a mosque that has become an integral part of community life, particularly in the Tutong District.
Over the past six decades, thousands of prayers have been performed at the mosque, with countless azan and iqamah recitations, Al-Quran verses recited and religious learning sessions conducted.
The mosque has also played a role in educating and guiding generations of the community. Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque, is more than a place of worship, serving as an institution for promoting Islam, education and knowledge, as well as fostering unity within the community.
Various segments of society, including children, youth, adults, congregants and Muslimah groups, have benefited from the religious and community activities conducted at the mosque.
The chief imam said the true value of a mosque lies not only in its physical structure, but also in how it is enlivened through worship, knowledge, ukhuwah and service to the community.
The ceremony continued with appreciation presentations to private-sector companies and individuals who had contributed infak and waqaf towards the development and upgrading of the mosque’s facilities, as well as the Diamond Jubilee celebration.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Dr Haji Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Ahmad, the guest of honour, presented tokens of appreciation to sponsors and waqif, as well as former imams and bilals who had served at the mosque.
