Rimba Secondary School emerged as the third-place winner among 160 schools from across Southeast Asia participating in the 2026 SEAMEO-Japan Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Award, presenting its student project ‘RimbaScan: From Using AI to Thinking with AI – Student-Built Offline AI for Plant Learning, Human Agency and Sustainable Futures’.
RimbaScan was created and developed by Rimba Secondary School students Ahmad Khairi Zakwan bin Haji Muhd Marzuki, Md Noor Ghazi Afif bin Md Noor Faizan, Muhammad Danny Daniel bin Abdullah and Ahmad Razeen bin Adi Shahreen, under the guidance of the school’s Education Officer Lena Ang Yan Ping.
The central principle of RimbaScan revolves around how artificial intelligence (AI) should support human judgement rather than replace it, and as part of the learning activities, students first make their own observations and predictions before using AI.
The students then compare the AI-generated results with available evidence, assess their level of confidence, carry out verification when necessary and make their final decisions based on their own judgement.
This approach fosters critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, self-confidence and human agency, while promoting a responsible understanding of both the capabilities and limitations of AI.
The approach was aligned with the theme of the 2026 SEAMEO-Japan ESD Award, which highlights the ethical and responsible use of AI to strengthen learning and well-being while addressing real-world sustainability challenges.
The award also emphasises student leadership, community collaboration, continuity and demonstrable impact, as the recognition at the international award marks another significant achievement in the continued development of RimbaScan.
The project team plans to expand the implementation of RimbaScan in classrooms, strengthen validation efforts with farmers and experts, develop additional learning materials related to plants and biodiversity, and produce teaching resources that can be used by future groups of students.
The Ministry of Education, through the Science, Technology and Environment Partnership Centre (STEP Centre), coordinated the school’s participation in the award, themed around ‘Learning and Well-being for Sustainable Futures: Leveraging the Power of AI’.
