Another feather in BIBD’s cap

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) has achieved Integrated ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems certification, becoming the first financial institution in Brunei Darussalam to attain this integrated certification.

The achievement reflects BIBD’s commitment to sustainability, workplace wellbeing and strong organisational practices across its operations.

The ISO certification event was held at the BIBD Yayasan Branch. Coordinating Minister for Social Policies and Manpower, Minister of Home Affairs and Chairman of BIBD Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman officiated the event as the guest of honour.

Marking an important milestone in BIBD’s efforts to strengthen its capabilities and build a resilient and responsible organisation for the future, the achievement was achieved through an approximately 16-month organisation-wide journey. It involved the development and implementation of a comprehensive Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management System, strengthened oversight structures, employee capability development, internal assessments and independent external audits.

Supported by strong leadership and guided by a shared commitment to excellence, the successful implementation of these internationally recognised standards was driven by employees across the organisation. These employees whose dedication, capability and professionalism helped translate requirements into practical and effective processes.

The achievement demonstrates that Bruneian professionals are well equipped to meet global benchmarks while contributing to the continued development of the nation’s financial sector.

As part of this journey, BIBD established a dedicated HSE Department in June 2025 to lead workplace health, safety and environmental initiatives across the bank.

BIBD also established a Workplace Safety and Health Committee, an Emergency Response Team, appointed HSE Coordinators across its branches and registered a Workplace Safety and Health Officer with SHENA, strengthening ownership and accountability throughout the organisation.

For financial institutions, effective environmental, health and safety management supports business continuity, operational readiness and the wellbeing of its workforce.

Through its integrated management system, BIBD has further strengthened its ability to manage risks, support its employees and continue delivering reliable services to customers and stakeholders. Commenting on the achievement, Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BIBD Haji Mohammad Yusri bin Haji Wahsalfelah said, “Alhamdulillah, attaining Integrated ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification is an important milestone in BIBD’s journey towards institutional excellence.”

Beyond the certification itself, he added, this achievement reflects the culture, discipline and accountability that continue to guide the way they operate and also demonstrates their commitment to protecting our people, caring for the environment and continuously improving their organisation.

“As an Islamic financial institution, we are guided by the principles of amanah, stewardship and responsibility. By embedding recognised global standards and best practices into our operations, we are strengthening our ability to serve customers, support our employees and create long-term value for our stakeholders.”

What is particularly encouraging is the significant contribution made by our people throughout this journey, he noted.

He noted that supported by strong leadership and guided by a shared commitment to excellence, employees across the organisation played a critical role in translating internationally recognised standards into practical and effective processes. “Their dedication, capability and professionalism have demonstrated that Bruneian talent possesses the expertise and potential to meet global benchmarks while contributing meaningfully to the continued development of our financial sector and our nation.”

Importantly, he added, this achievement contributes not only to BIBD’s development but also demonstrates the capability of Bruneian institutions to meet global benchmarks while remaining firmly rooted in the values and principles that define our nation.

As part of the certification journey, selected employees completed extensive HSE and ISO-related training programmes covering environmental management, risk assessment, incident management, emergency response, workplace safety and governance requirements.

The certification covers BIBD’s branches and back-office operations across the organisation, with the recently opened BIBD Yayasan Branch to be incorporated into the certification scope subsequently.

For customers and stakeholders, the certification provides additional assurance that BIBD operates within structured management systems designed to support risk management, business continuity and the delivery of essential banking services.

The achievement also reflects the bank’s continued investment in its people, processes and operational capabilities.

The milestone advances BIBD’s sustainability agenda and contributes to the aspirations of Wawasan Brunei 2035, while supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13: Climate Action

The certification also builds upon BIBD’s wider efforts to strengthen sustainability practices, enhance organisational effectiveness and maintain a safe and healthy working environment.

More broadly, it demonstrates how Bruneian organisations can successfully adopt global best practices while continuing to uphold the values that shape the nation’s identity.

Guided by a workplace culture founded on amanah, care, accountability and continuous improvement, BIBD remains committed to safeguarding its people, fulfilling its environmental responsibilities and strengthening the foundations needed to support sustainable growth and national development.
