Brunei, Russia mark diplomatic ties

The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Brunei Darussalam hosted a reception recently to mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and Russia, reaffirming the longstanding friendship and growing cooperation between both nations.

The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government representatives, media, and civil society.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pengiran Norhashimah binti Pengiran Mohd Hassan was the guest of honour.

In his remarks, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Brunei Darussalam Mikhail Baranov highlighted the steady development of bilateral ties rooted in mutual respect and constructive dialogue. He recalled high-level historic meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, including their first meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan in 2000 and His Majesty’s state visit to Russia in 2005.

Ambassador Mikhail Baranov noted that 2026 has witnessed active political exchanges, such as Brunei’s Minister of Foreign Affairs II visiting Moscow in March to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov; His Majesty attending the Russia-ASEAN Summit in Kazan in June; and His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen, Minister of Foreign Affairs, meeting Sergey Lavrov in New York in September.

Defence ties have also deepened following August consultations in Moscow between Coordinating Minister for National Security, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof and Secretary of the Security Council Sergey Shoigu, followed by the second Joint Working Group meeting on defence in September.

Bilateral trade continues to expand towards USD900 million, while educational and cultural initiatives – including the launch of a Russian Corner at Universiti Teknologi Brunei – further strengthen people-to-people connections as both countries pursue deeper future cooperation.
