Six days of competition came to a close with the conclusion of the National Pencak Silat Championship at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last night.
Held in conjunction with the 80th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the championship brought together 147 participants from seven contingents from September 14 to 19.
Competitors contested five disciplines – Cakak Asli Brunei, Kuntau Melayu, Tanding, Seni Antarabangsa and Seni Festival.
The contingents represented Brunei-Muara, Belait, Tutong and Temburong districts, along with the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council (MS ABDB), Royal Brunei Police Force Sports Council (MS PPDB) and Brunei Darussalam Schools Sports Council (MS SSBD).
The closing programme began with a procession and keris-sheathing ceremony before the final bouts took centre stage.
Muhammad Akmal Shafiq bin Mohamad Sairual Rizal of Temburong captured the Cakak Asli Brunei title, ahead of MS ABDB’s 53286 SLD Juzaili bin Abdullah.
Belait’s Arif bin Yahya @ Johari and MS SSBD’s Md Firas Naim bin Md Syamsuddin shared third place.
In Kuntau Melayu, Belait’s Muhammad Nizamuddin bin Fairulman emerged champion, while PC 6315 Mohammad Zulfaizal bin Zanidi of MS PPDB finished runner-up.
MS ABDB’s 55791 SLD Mohammad Hazim bin Ramliee and Brunei-Muara’s Mohamad Hawwari bin Mohamad Masuni shared third.
MS SSBD’s Md Asyraf Syafiee bin Norazrin topped the Tanding Putra Remaja Kelas C category, followed by Belait’s Muhammad Syafiy Nasrullah bin L Menga.
Tutong’s Muhd Hazmi Akmal bin Md Iman Safwan and Brunei-Muara’s Muhammad Wazien bin Rosman shared third place.
Meanwhile, Yaswantnaoah bin Yalim of Tutong claimed the Tanding Putra Dewasa Kelas C crown. MS ABDB’s 55796 SLD Ak Md Nabil Mirza bin Pg Md Fazillah finished second, while Md Firdaus bin Muhidi of Brunei-Muara took third.
Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Wadood Bolkiah attended as the guest of honour and presented prizes to the winners.
The closing ceremony also featured Seni Cakak Asli Brunei and Kuntau Melayu performances, showcasing the traditional martial arts elements of pencak silat.
The championship culminated with the presentation of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Kurnia Shields and accompanying awards.
Besides providing exponents with competitive experience and an opportunity to develop their skills, the championship served as a platform to promote pencak silat and preserve its place in Brunei’s sporting and cultural heritage.
