The Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) and the Authority for Infocommunications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) hosted the ASEAN Workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Skilling Framework on September 2 and 3, 2026.
The two-day workshop served as a collaborative platform for ASEAN Member States (AMS) and relevant stakeholders to discuss and align the AI Skilling Framework with regional digital economy goals, as well as to share best practices among AMS.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocommunications) at the MTIC Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim attended the event as the Brunei Darussalam ASEAN Digital Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADGSOM) Leader.
In his welcoming remarks, the deputy permanent secretary emphasised how AI can improve productivity, transform businesses, deliver better public services and create new industries. As AI continues to evolve, it is essential to ensure that society, MSMEs and communities are equippedto participate in and benefit from these changes.
Brunei Darussalam is leading the development of the ASEAN AI Skilling Framework, which will serve as a common regional reference to help identify AI competencies required across the workforce and industries, while allowing member states to develop programmes and training pathways according to their respective needs and circumstances.
The outcomes of the workshop will mark an important milestone in translating shared insights into tangible project deliverables.
The constructive feedback gathered will directly contribute to the formulation and development of the ASEAN AI Skilling Framework, ensuring that the standardised competency benchmarks, training guidelines, and sector-specific job roles reflect the realities of businesses across ASEAN.
It also supports the strategic vision of the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2030 (ADM 2030) as ASEAN transitions from basic connectivity to connected intelligence.
The workshop was attended by representatives from the government agencies, financial institutions, ICT industry and academic institutions across the AMS.
The next step is to consolidate the findings and feedback from the workshop to refine the proposed ASEAN AI Skilling Framework.
MTIC and AITI are working closely with AMS focal points to review and refine these outputs ahead of submission for the endorsement by the ASEAN Digital Senior Officials Meeting (ADGSOM).
The proposed framework is expected to be finalised and presented at the 2nd ASEAN Digital Senior Officials’ Meeting and ASEAN Telecommunications Regulators’ Council (ADGSOM – ATRC) Leaders’ Retreat of 2026, scheduled for later this year.
