Inmate creativity, skills take centre stage

Showcasing the creativity and skills developed by inmates through rehabilitation programmes, vocational training and skills development initiatives implemented at prison institutions, the three-day Borneo Prison Products Expo 2026 was launched at the open area of Dermaga Diraja in Bandar Seri Begawan yesterday.

Permanent Secretary (Security, Enforcement and Law) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Hajah Nor Hamidah binti Haji Hamidon, the guest of honour, presented certificates of participation to the recipients in recognition of their involvement and support in making the expo a success.

She toured the booths, which showcased a variety of handicrafts, products and creative works produced by prison institutions in Brunei Darussalam and across Borneo. The expo features a range of handicrafts, products and creative works produced by prison institutions in Brunei Darussalam and Borneo, including Limbang Central Prison, Miri Central Prison and correctional institutions in Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Throughout the event, the public can explore exhibitions and demonstrations. Products on display include furniture, woodwork, handicrafts, calligraphy, carvings, home decorations, souvenirs, sewn products, baskets, woven items and a variety of food products.

The expo also features entrepreneurs from Rakan Seliaan, as well as participants of the One Village One Product (1K1P) initiative.

Their participation not only broadens the selection of products available to visitors but also provides local entrepreneurs with opportunities to introduce, promote and expand the market reach of their businesses. The diverse range of products on display highlights not only the talents and creativity of inmates but also the practical skills they have acquired through continuous training and rehabilitation programmes.

The expo also conveys the message about the rehabilitation and social reintegration of inmates. The displayed works reflect the dedication, commitment and skills developed by inmates as they prepare to build more productive lives after serving their sentences.

Public support not only recognises the efforts and craftsmanship of inmates but also provides encouragement and motivation for them to further develop their potential and abilities.

It also reinforces the Prisons Department’s efforts to provide learning opportunities, skills development and vocational training to prepare inmates for more productive lives following their release.

The participation of prison institutions from across Borneo further establishes the expo as a platform for showcasing diverse products and encouraging the sharing of experiences and practices in rehabilitation, skills development and the reintegration of inmates among regional prison institutions.

The expo is expected to raise public awareness and understanding of the importance of rehabilitation programmes and skills development initiatives implemented by prison institutions.

It is also expected to strengthen cooperation among regional prison institutions, particularly in sharing experiences, knowledge and best practices related to inmate rehabilitation and skills development. – James Kon
