Minister to graduates: Use AI responsibly

Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh has urged graduates of the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) to use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve their efficiency and capabilities without becoming overly dependent on technology.

Speaking at IBTE’s 34th Convocation Ceremony on Wednesday, she said AI should complement, rather than replace, the skills, knowledge and human judgement developed through learning and personal experience.

She noted that AI, automation and digital technology were increasingly shaping how people learn and work. Integrating AI into technical and vocational education and training (TVET) was therefore important to keeping graduates competitive and responsive to changing industry needs.

However, she cautioned that technological convenience should not lead to dependence.

“We must be careful that convenience does not turn into dependence,” she said, reminding graduates that skills could weaken if left unpractised and that excessive reliance on external assistance could limit independent thinking.

She encouraged them to use AI to enhance their potential while continuing to develop their own knowledge, technical abilities and decision-making skills.

The minister highlighted the practical nature of TVET, where students gain hands-on experience in workshops, laboratories, classrooms and training environments.

Through trying, making mistakes, correcting them and trying again, students develop skills and confidence, she said, adding that practical experience remained essential in developing sound judgement.

As AI becomes more influential, she said, human capabilities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, strong technical foundations and responsible decision-making would become increasingly valuable.

Addressing the graduates, she said they were not merely future members of the workforce, but also a generation that would help shape the country’s future.

Describing the convocation as the beginning of a new chapter, she encouraged graduates to build on the knowledge and experience gained at IBTE, pursue opportunities with confidence and continue learning throughout their lives.
