Over 31,000 homes completed under national housing scheme

The Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam remains committed to providing comfortable, safe, quality and affordable housing, with 31,145 housing units completed under the National Housing Scheme since its introduction in 1984.

The achievement was highlighted by Deputy Minister of Development Datin Seri Paduka Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak during the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Department of Housing Development under the Ministry of Development and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), alongside the launch of the Rumah Impian Mampu Milik Exhibition at Bridex Hall.

She noted that applications for the National Housing Scheme continued to rise annually, prompting the government to strengthen its housing development strategies to meet growing demand and support the aspirations of Brunei Vision 2035.

These strategies include optimising land availability, diversifying housing development approaches and introducing alternative financing models through strategic partnerships with financial institutions and the private sector.

The initiatives aim to ensure government allocations are used optimally while supporting the national target of achieving an 85 per cent homeownership rate by 2035.

Datin Seri Paduka Dr Nor Imtihan said the MoU with BIBD would strengthen national housing provision through alternative financing and development approaches.

The collaboration will introduce two programmes under the Rumah Impian Mampu Milik initiative – the Civil Servants Financing Programme and the Rumah Impian Programme – to provide National Housing Scheme applicants with more inclusive and flexible pathways to homeownership.

The Civil Servants Financing Programme will enable civil servants to purchase homes of their choice on the open market, including properties held under freehold or leasehold arrangements.

Meanwhile, the Rumah Impian Programme will offer affordable housing on government land, with infrastructure provided to help achieve more affordable selling prices for targeted groups.

Under the arrangement, BIBD will serve as the financing provider, while the participation of local developers is expected to stimulate the construction industry and contribute to economic growth.

The Rumah Impian Mampu Milik Exhibition aims to familiarise the public, particularly National Housing Scheme applicants, with both programmes by providing information on housing types, designs, eligibility requirements and financing facilities.

The exhibition will help prospective homeowners assess available options and select properties suited to their needs and financial capabilities, supporting wider access to homeownership. – James Kon
