‘Reflecting on mortality strengthens faith’

Remembering death serves as a reminder for Muslims to turn away from worldly distractions, hasten in performing righteous deeds and prepare for the hereafter, according to a religious speaker during the 249th Munajat Night organised by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA).

Certified preacher of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council from Kampong Lumapas Mosque Abdul Hadi Nasrullah bin Muhammad Ashraf delivered the talk ‘Zikrul Maut – Benteng dan Penyelamat Diri’ during the programme.

He said death is an inevitable reality of life that every living being will experience, describing it not as an end but as a gateway to eternal life.

He cited Prophet Muhammad‘s (pbuh) recommendation to constantly remember death, adding that Imam Al-Ghazali in his work Ihya’ ‘Ulumuddin highlighted two main benefits of remembering death.

The first is An-Nafrah ‘anid dunya, whereby the heart distances itself from being deceived by the luxuries of the world.

The second is Asy-Syauq ilal-akhirah, which refers to developing a deep longing for the rewards and eternal life of the hereafter.

He also cited the advice of Imam ‘Abdullah bin Alawi Al-Haddad, who said that those who consistently keep death before their eyes will be encouraged to hasten in performing righteous deeds, develop a sense of zuhud and hasten to repent.

He expressed hope that Allah the Almighty will grant Muslims’ hearts that are always prepared, bless them with a good ending (husnul khatimah) and gather them among Allah the Almighty’s righteous servants in the hereafter.

The programme began with the recitation of Sayyidul Istighfar and Surah Al-Fatihah led by Legislative Council member and Village Head of Kampong Lumapas ‘B’ Yang Berhormat Mohamad Ali bin Tanjong, who is also the Adviser to the Kampong Lumapas Mosque Committee.

The recitation was broadcast from Kampong Lumapas Mosque.

This was followed by the mass recitation of Surah Al-Mulk led by Education Officer, Department of Schools, Ministry of Education (MoE), and Secretary of the Kampong Lumapas Mosque Takmir Committee Mohamad Wazzirul Wafaudin bin Esa.

The Doa Munajat was recited by Acting Chief Imam and Imam of Kampong Lumapas Mosque, Mosque Affairs Department Muhammad Aizat bin Mohammad Sah Minan.

The programme continued with a prayer seeking rainfall amid the haze, led by Special Grade Education Officer at Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre, Department of Schools, MoE, and Deputy Chairman of the Kampong Lumapas ‘B’ Village Consultative Council Haji Zulkiflee bin Haji Jaili.

Following the talk, Selawat Tafrijiyyah was led by youth representative of Kampong Lumapas Mosque Haji Mohammad Ali Wafiuddin bin Haji Osman.

The Doa Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara Brunei Darussalam was recited by bilal of Kampong Lumapas Mosque Muhammad Hilmi bin Muhammad Iskandar.

This week’s Munajat Night was enlivened by members of the Takmir Committee, youth and congregants from Kampong Lumapas Mosque, as well as participants from mosques and prayer halls nationwide.

MoRA personnel and the public also participated virtually from their homes. Munajat Night aims to encourage the Muslim community to strengthen their relationship with Allah the Almighty through spiritual practices, seek forgiveness, recite and reflect upon Al-Quran, and collectively raise and affirm prayers with hope that Brunei Darussalam, its people and residents will remain protected from calamities and infectious diseases.
