Carry hopes of district, Belait contingent told

A flag handover ceremony was held yesterday at Dewan Intisar, Belait District Office, for the Belait District contingent, comprising 180 athletes competing in the upcoming 5th Brunei Darussalam National Games (SKBD) 2026.

Acting Belait District Officer Muhammad Faiq bin Haji Rani officiating the ceremony said; “This time, athletes from the Belait District will be participating in every sporting event – aquatics, badminton, football, futsal, karate, athletics, netball, pencak silat, sepak takraw and tug-of-war.”

“The strength of Belait District has never rested on any single association or club, but rather, it lies in our willingness to move forward together as one district, regardless of our backgrounds. In other words, one district, one contingent.” He reminded the athletes that their performance on the field or court is not just representing themselves, their associations or clubs, but that they are representing an entire district.

“Behind you are your families, coaches, teachers, friends and everyone who has provided, and continues to provide support. Carry the hopes of this district with you and remember the people who believe in you.”

Following the opening remarks, the acting Belait district officer handed over the contingent’s flag to Contingent Chief and Acting Assistant Belait District Officer Pengiran Kamal Ariffin bin Pengiran Haji Md Yassin.

Upon receiving the flag, Pengiran Kamal Ariffin handed it over to flag bearer, Awangku Muhammad Abdul Qawi bin Pengiran Haji Zainal, a karate athlete who has secured 16 medals, comprising three gold, five silver and eight bronze, across competitions in Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia throughout 2026.

He also represented Brunei Darussalam at the Southeast Asian Karate Championships in Vietnam and the 2026 Selangor Malaysia Games.

The acting Belait district officer also presented letters of appreciation to sponsors of the Belait District contingent. The 5th Brunei Darussalam National Games 2026 to be held from November 7-14, is organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and managed by the country’s sports associations.

Belait District will send 180 athletes and 70 officials, including team managers and coaches.
