‘Opportunity to meet His Majesty a cherished lifelong memory’

The opportunity to meet and take a photograph with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was a cherished lifelong memory, Acting Village Head of Kampong Sengkurong ‘A’ Pengiran Haji Yaakub bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Salleh said during the get-together ceremony yesterday.

He said the get-together ceremony reflects the people’s loyalty to His Majesty while instilling the values of respect and patriotism in younger generations. Although this year’s event was held on a working day, he noted that the enthusiasm among attendees remained high.

He also expressed gratitude for His Majesty’s bercemar duli tradition, saying it reflects the monarch’s love and care for the people and highlights the close bond between the monarch and the people.

One of the three selected youth among the five chosen to share a table with His Majesty during the santap (luncheon) following the get-together ceremony spoke to the Bulletin about the experience. Education Officer Haji Khairul Azhar bin Haji Rosli described being selected to meet His Majesty as a meaningful and unforgettable honour, saying he felt humbled and grateful. He said the experience inspired him to continue contributing to the nation through education and innovation, believing that even small ideas can create a positive impact.

Commenting on the get-together ceremony, he described the event as warm and uplifting, with a strong spirit of unity among people from all walks of life, adding that the gathering reflected His Majesty’s close bond with the people and inspired everyone to continue contributing to Brunei Darussalam’s development.

Meanwhile, Lee Jing Jing, an outstanding youth awardee for her achievement and contribution during her student years at Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, said, “I was honestly very surprised and deeply honoured. I’m truly grateful for this rare privilege and opportunity.

“It also made me really happy because I think it sends an encouraging message to young people that their hard work and contributions are recognised and appreciated. It’ll motivate us to continue giving back to our community.”

She noted that yesterday’s experience reminded her that every contribution has value and it inspires her to continue serving her community, keep learning and use her skills to make a positive difference for Brunei. As for the ceremony itself, she found the atmosphere was warm, joyful and full of unity. One could feel the excitement and appreciation from everyone who came together to celebrate this special occasion, she said.

“I think the gathering reflects the close relationship between His Majesty and the people of Brunei. Being able to celebrate together like this creates a sense of closeness and unity, and it reminds us that everyone has a role to play in contributing to our country’s future.”

Assistant Project Officer II Muhammad Khalil Hazazi bin Haji Abdul Latif said he was surprised to be nominated when he first heard the news, and equally so when he learned he was selected.

“I feel today proves that His Majesty really wishes us to succeed. The five of us who were selected for the luncheon are people who really work hard and do their outmost best in what they do.

“I was thankful that we got to talk to His Majesty about the work we’ve done. It was all smiles in the end.” – Lyna Mohamad
