A simple act of kindness by a member of the public has earned praise from the Belait District Office after he was spotted voluntarily cleaning the former Rasau Toll Plaza area.
During a routine patrol, officers from the district office’s Enforcement Unit came across Wong Mann Poh quietly collecting litter scattered around the former toll plaza.
Without being asked, Wong was seen picking up plastic waste, food packaging and other rubbish believed to have been carelessly discarded by road users, placing them into plastic bags to help restore the cleanliness and comfort of the area.
The Enforcement Unit commended Wong for his thoughtfulness, civic-mindedness and volunteer spirit, describing his actions as an inspiring example of how one person can make a meaningful difference to the community.
The district office said his efforts reflect the shared responsibility of caring for public spaces and expressed hope that more members of the public would follow his example in helping to keep Brunei clean.
At the same time, the Enforcement Unit reminded the public that littering not only tarnishes the environment but is also an offence under Section 12(1) of the Minor Offences Act (Chapter 30).
Individuals or companies found guilty of littering may face enforcement action, including compound fines. Those who fail to settle the compound may be prosecuted in court.
Upon conviction, individuals may be fined up to BND9,000, while companies may be fined up to BND30,000. Offenders may also face imprisonment for up to 12 months.
The public was urged to dispose of waste responsibly using designated bins and to work together in preserving the cleanliness of the environment, stressing that small acts of care can help create a cleaner, more beautiful Brunei for everyone.
