‘AI should be a tool, judgement must remain central’

Artificial intelligence (AI) should serve as a tool to support professionals, while professional judgement and responsibility must remain central, said Chairperson of Board of Architects, Professional Engineers and Quantity Surveyors’ (BAPEQS) Socialisation and Publicity Committee Ir Dayangku Roselawati binti Pengiran Haji Halus.

She said this in her welcoming remarks during the Muzakarah Session with Premium Professionals by the BAPEQS at Betabur Hall, Ministry of Development yesterday. The session explored how AI is affecting professional practice in Brunei Darussalam’s built environment sector. She also highlighted the need to verify the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated information and ensure its responsible use.

She encouraged professionals to continuously enhance their knowledge, develop new skills and adapt to changes within the industry, while upholding professional standards, integrity and accountability.

The programme featured three invited keynote speakers and a sharing session by architects and engineers from the Department of Technical Services and the Department of Drainage and Sewerage, Public Works Department on the integration of AI and public infrastructure.

It also featured a question-and-answer session where professionals exchanged views on the potential applications of AI and considerations for its adoption within Brunei Darussalam’s professional practice landscape. Titled ‘Exploring the Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Architectural, Engineering and Quantity Surveying Practices in Brunei Darussalam’, the session provided a platform for BAPEQS members, industry practitioners and representatives from government departments to share experiences and exchange perspectives.

The session aimed to strengthen understanding of practical AI applications, including generative AI, automation and data analytics, efficiency in building design, operation and maintenance in the delivery of professional services.

It also sought to encourage knowledge transfer between the public and private sectors to support adaptation to technological developments and strengthen professional practice.

Through this engagement, BAPEQS aims to strengthen collaboration and knowledge sharing between government agencies and industry practitioners, while encouraging the exploration of technologies that can enhance service quality and professionalism across architecture, engineering and quantity surveying.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Development Dr Chin Wei Keh was the guest of honour.
