Türkiye ambassador highlights opportunities to deepen Brunei ties

Brunei Darussalam and Türkiye are looking to expand cooperation in defence, technology, education, trade, investment and culture, opening up new opportunities for both countries.

Türkiye’s Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Professor Dr Hamit Ersoy, highlighted the potential for closer ties during a reception marking the 103rd anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye, the 503rd anniversary of its Foreign Service and 42 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries at The Rizqun International Hotel on Thursday night.

Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar was the guest of honour.

The ambassador said bilateral relations gained fresh momentum following His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s state visit to Türkiye in March 2023.

Political consultations in December 2024 and October 22, 2026, further laid the groundwork for cooperation in defence, education, trade, investment, technology, tourism and infrastructure.

In defence and technology, visits by Turkish defence technology companies ASELSAN in September 2026 and HAVELSAN have opened opportunities to explore collaboration with the Ministry of Defence and relevant institutions, particularly in defence electronics and advanced technologies.

Ersoy said Türkiye’s technological and industrial expertise could complement Brunei’s economic diversification efforts and support local capacity building through knowledge-sharing and technology partnerships.

He also highlighted growing people-to-people links through Turkish language courses at local higher education institutions and schools, alongside cultural activities such as traditional Ebru marbling, calligraphy, archery workshops, exhibitions and film screenings.

Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar and spouse cuts a cake to mark the occasion with Türkiye’s Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam.

The Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre, which now has a dedicated building in the Diplomatic Enclave, is expected to further strengthen cultural exchange by bringing together students, academics, artists and the diplomatic community.

Ersoy encouraged more Bruneians to pursue higher education in Türkiye through its universities and scholarship programmes.
